5 Things I've Discovered Since Deleting Facebook

Last night, I decided to uninstall Facebook from my phone <insert blood-curdling scream here> and the past 24 hours have been eye-opening. In just one-day's time, I have already realized how attached I was, and I can't even tell you why! A few days ago, I was scrolling aimlessly through my newsfeed, watching dog videos and drooling over some recipe I'd never actually make. But today, I am free! Here's what's happened since deleting Facebook's app:

1. No more morning scroll

We all do it: wake up in the morning and immediately reach for the phone. Usually, the first 20 minutes of my day are spent catching up on everything that I missed through the night. Typically, I don't miss anything. But nonetheless, I do this same thing every single morning. Today, however, I woke up and spent half the time I usually do running through my other apps. My morning routine still isn't cellphone free, but it's a start!

2. My push notifications no longer stress me out

The main reason I spend so much time in the morning on Facebook is clearing all the annoying notifications. Today, I woke up without notifications telling me that I'd been tagged in an arguable funny, but unnecessary, meme or that it's my distant friend's aunt's birthday today. Instead, I had a few snaps, a couple likes on Instagram, and some emails that went straight into the junk folder. Yes, I could have just turned off the notifications for Facebook – but uninstalling the app is just so much more rewarding.

3. I haven't overcompensated by using other apps more

Last night, I thought that I might be tempted to use my other apps more, but so far so good! I'm still on them, of course, but I haven't been using them any more than usual. I write that off as a win!

4. Logging into Facebook on my laptop seems like a waste of time

I could log into Facebook on my laptop and see what's going on, but I already know what I'm going to see. Memes, videos, ads, fake news, and almost nothing of actual personal value. I'm sure I'll break in the next day or two, but I couldn't be bothered in the last 24 hours. Besides, someone needs to like my grandma's posts. I feel bad.

5. I don't even have my phone near me as a write this blog

It's gone above and beyond my addiction to Facebook: my cleanse has extended to my phone too! I'm sitting here, typing away, and my phone is all the way on the other side of the room! Call me dramatic – but this is a huge moment. My phone is almost always within arm's reach. But now, without Facebook tempting me every five minutes, my phone sits peacefully away from my body, and silent without all the needless notifications.

Final thoughts on deleting Facebook

We'll see how long this lasts, but today I'm optimistic (and other blog posts give me hope)! No one needs to be connected with everyone in their social network at all times, and I feel great deleting Facebook from my phone. A little disclaimer for all of my Facebook friends: I'm sorry in advance if I don't comment on your baby shower photos or reply to that meme you tagged me in, but you look great, even with a belly, and yes, I did lol.
